Иван: Конечно, есть нос! Вот его нос. Он жёлтый.

🔍 Grammar Focus

This simple conversation is packed with essential Russian grammar for beginners. Let’s look at two key concepts.

1. Adjective Agreement (Gender and Number)

In Russian, adjectives must “agree” with the nouns they describe. This means their endings change based on the noun’s gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and number (singular, plural).

In the dialogue, Лабубу is treated as a masculine noun (он). Notice how the adjectives describing him end in -ый or -ий:

  • Он маленький. (He is small.)
  • Он фиолетовый. (He is purple.)
  • Жёлтый нос. (A yellow nose.)

However, when describing plural nouns like “ears” (уши) and “eyes” (глаза), the adjective ending changes to -ые or -ие:

  • У него очень большие уши. (He has very big ears.)
  • У него зелёные глаза. (He has green eyes.)

2. Expressing Possession with “У + Genitive Case”

To say “I have,” “he has,” etc., Russian uses a special construction: У + [person in Genitive case] + есть. This literally translates to “By [person] there is…”

You can see this pattern throughout the script:

  • У меня есть что-то новое. (I have something new.)
  • У него очень большие уши. (He has very big ears.) - Note: есть is often omitted when describing inherent qualities.
  • У него есть нос? (Does he have a nose?)

Меня is the genitive form of я (I), and него is the genitive form of он (he).

🌍 Cultural Tip

In Russian culture, toys and characters are often given distinct personalities and spoken to as if they were real friends. When describing colors and features, Russians use the same adjective agreement rules for fictional creatures as they do for people, typically defaulting to the masculine gender for characters unless specified otherwise.

💡 Key Takeaways

Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • Introducing Someone/Something: Use the phrase Это… (This is…). For example: Это Лабубу!
  • Describing Nouns: Remember that Russian adjectives must agree with the noun’s gender and number. Masculine singular adjectives often end in -ый/-ий (e.g., маленький), while plural adjectives often end in -ые/-ие (e.g., большие).
  • Expressing Possession: The common way to say “to have” is with the structure У + [person] + есть. For example, У меня есть друг (I have a friend) or У него есть нос (He has a nose).
  • Asking Descriptive Questions: To ask “What is he like?” use Какой он?. To ask “What color is he?” use Какого он цвета?.
