Аня: У меня тоже хорошо. Иван, скажи, какой твой обычный день?
(Anya: I’m good too. Ivan, tell me, what is your typical day?)
Иван: Мой день? Хорошо. Утром я встаю. Я пью кофе и ем бутерброд. Это мой завтрак.
(Ivan: My day? Okay. In the morning I get up. I drink coffee and eat a sandwich. This is my breakfast.)
Аня: Интересно. Утром я тоже встаю. Но я пью чай и ем кашу. Это мой завтрак.
(Anya: Interesting. In the morning I also get up. But I drink tea and eat porridge. This is my breakfast.)
Иван: Понятно. Твой завтрак – это чай и каша. А мой завтрак – это кофе и бутерброд.
(Ivan: I see. Your breakfast is tea and porridge. And my breakfast is coffee and a sandwich.)
Аня: Да. А что ты делаешь потом? Днём?
(Anya: Yes. And what do you do after that? In the daytime?)
Иван: Днём я иду в университет. В университете я учусь. Я читаю книги.
(Ivan: In the daytime I go to the university. At the university I study. I read books.)
Аня: А я днём иду на работу. На работе я работаю. Я смотрю в компьютер.
(Anya: And I go to work in the daytime. At work I work. I look at the computer.)
Иван: Ты работаешь, а я учусь. Что ты делаешь вечером?
(Ivan: You work, and I study. What do you do in the evening?)
Аня: Вечером я иду домой. Дома я готовлю ужин. Потом я говорю по телефону. Мой кот Персик спит.
(Anya: In the evening I go home. At home I cook dinner. Then I talk on the phone. My cat Persik is sleeping.)
Иван: А я вечером тоже иду домой. Дома я читаю книгу или смотрю телевизор. Мой кот Борис тоже спит.

🔍 Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two important grammar points from Ivan and Anya’s conversation.
1. Prepositional Case for Location (Где? - Where?)
In Russian, to say where something is or where an action happens, you often use the Prepositional case. The prepositions в (in, at) and на (on, at) are commonly used. Notice how the noun endings change.
In the dialogue, Ivan and Anya say:
- Днём я иду в университет. (I go to the university - Accusative, indicates direction)
- В университете я учусь. (At the university I study - Prepositional, indicates location)
- А я днём иду на работу. (I go to work - Accusative, indicates direction)
- На работе я работаю. (At work I work - Prepositional, indicates location)
For many masculine and feminine nouns, you add -е to the end in the Prepositional case. For example, работа becomes на работе.
2. First-Person Singular Verbs (Я - I)
When talking about your own actions in the present tense, verbs change their endings. In the dialogue, you see many examples of verbs used with “Я” (I). Most end in -ю or -у.
- Я встаю (I get up)
- Я пью (I drink)
- Я ем (I eat - this is an irregular verb)
- Я иду (I go)
- Я учусь (I study)
- Я читаю (I read)
- Я работаю (I work)
- Я смотрю (I watch)
- Я говорю (I speak)
This is the “Я” form, and it’s one of the first and most important verb endings to learn!
