(Ivan: Grandma, hello!)

(Babushka: Hello, Vanya! How are you?)

(Ivan: Everything is good, thank you. Grandma, what is your favorite season?)

(Babushka: Hmm, good question. I think I love summer.)

(Ivan: Summer? Why?)

(Babushka: Because in the summer it’s warm. And in my garden, there are many beautiful flowers.)

(Ivan: Yes, your garden is very beautiful. But I love winter.)

(Babushka: Winter? But in winter it’s cold!)

(Ivan: Yes, but in winter there is snow. You can play snowballs and go skiing.)

(Ivan: And also in winter is the New Year! It’s my favorite holiday.)

(Misha the bear: Ahem-ahem… Hello!)

(Babushka: Oh, Misha, hello! Come in!)

(Ivan: Hello, Misha! We are talking about the seasons.)

(Babushka: Misha, and what is your favorite season?)

(Misha the bear: That’s easy! I love both summer and autumn.)

(Ivan: Why?)

(Misha the bear: In the summer, there are many berries in the forest. And in the autumn, there is honey.)

(Babushka: And winter, Misha?)

(Misha the bear: And in the winter, I sleep. All winter.)

(Ivan: Ha-ha, of course! You’re a bear!)

(Babushka: Well then, shall we have some tea with pirozhki?)

(Misha the bear: With pirozhki? Of course!)

(Ivan: Yes, great idea!)

🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s look at one of the most useful constructions from the dialogue for expressing reasons.

Giving Reasons with ‘Потому что’ (Because)

In English, we answer the question “Why?” with “Because…” In Russian, it’s exactly the same! The question word is почему (pochemú), and the answer always starts with потому что (potomú shto).

Notice this simple pattern in the dialogue:

Example 1:

(Ivan: Summer? Why?)

(Babushka: Because in the summer it’s warm.)

Example 2:

(Ivan: Why?)

(Misha the bear: Because in the summer, there are many berries in the forest.)

Mastering this pair—почему? and потому что—is a key step to explaining your thoughts and opinions in Russian.

🌍 Cultural Tip

Ivan mentions that his favorite holiday is Новый год (New Year). In Russia and many other post-Soviet countries, New Year’s is the biggest celebration of the winter season, often more significant than Christmas. It’s a secular holiday celebrated on the night of December 31st with family gatherings, large meals, gifts brought by Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost), and the President’s televised address just before midnight.
