Иван: Сначала нам нужна земля. Я кладу землю в горшок.

Аня: Я вижу. Маленькое семя теперь в земле, в горшке.

Иван: Да. Я закрываю семя землёй. Вот так. Теперь семя спит.
(Ivan: Yes. I am covering the seed with soil. Like this. Now the seed is sleeping.)

Аня: Оно спит в земле. А что потом? Что разбудит семя?
(Anya: It is sleeping in the soil. And what’s next? What will wake the seed up?)

Иван: Его разбудит вода. Теперь нужна вода. Ты хочешь полить?
(Ivan: Water will wake it up. Now we need water. Do you want to water it?)

Аня: Да, я хочу! Дай мне, пожалуйста, лейку.
(Anya: Yes, I want to! Give me the watering can, please.)

Иван: Конечно, держи.
(Ivan: Of course, here you go.)

Аня: Спасибо. Я поливаю землю. Я поливаю наше семя. Кап-кап-кап.

1. Expressing “Need”: The Dative Case + нужен/нужна/нужно

In Russian, to say that someone needs something, you use a construction with the Dative case. The person who needs something is put in the Dative case, followed by a form of the word нужен (needed).

The form of нужен changes to agree in gender and number with the item that is needed.

• нужен (masculine): Нам нужен горшок. (We need a pot.) - горшок is masculine.
• нужна (feminine): Нам нужна земля. (We need soil.) - земля is feminine.
• нужно (neuter): Ему нужно солнце. (It needs sun.) - солнце is neuter.
• нужны (plural): Нам нужны инструменты. (We need tools.) - plural noun.

In the dialogue, нам is the Dative form of мы (we), so “Нам нужен” literally means “To us is needed”.

2. The Verb “to Put”: класть (я кладу)

Ivan uses the verb класть (to put, to place) twice. This is an imperfective verb used for the action of putting something somewhere. In the dialogue, you see its first-person singular present tense form, я кладу (I put / I am putting).

Notice how it’s used with the preposition в (in, into) followed by the Accusative case to show direction.

• Я **кладу** землю **в горшок**. (I am putting the soil into the pot.)
• Я ... **кладу** семя **сюда**. (I … am putting the seed here.)

This is a fundamental verb for describing actions and placing objects.
