🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s look at a key grammar point from this dialogue: how to talk about activities on specific days of the week.

Using “в” (on) with Days of the Week

In English, we say “on Monday,” “on Tuesday,” etc. In Russian, you use the preposition в followed by the day of the week in the Accusative case. For A1 learners, the main thing to remember is the pattern.

  • понедельник (Monday) → в понедельник (on Monday)
  • среда (Wednesday) → в среду (on Wednesday)
  • пятница (Friday) → в пятницу (on Friday)
  • суббота (Saturday) → в субботу (on Saturday)
  • воскресенье (Sunday) → в воскресенье (on Sunday)

Notice in the script:

Иван: Что мы делаем в понедельник?

Аня: В субботу мы можем играть в футбол…

Special Case: Во вторник

You probably noticed that for Tuesday (вторник), Anya says во вторник, not “в вторник”. The preposition becomes во when the following word starts with a consonant cluster (like вт). This makes it easier to pronounce.

Иван: А что мы делаем во вторник?

For Thursday (четверг), both в четверг and во четверг are technically possible, but в четверг is more common, as used in the dialogue.

🌍 Cultural Tip

In Russia, the work week officially begins on Monday, and Russian calendars always list Monday as the first day. Weekends, or “выходные,” are highly valued for socializing and relaxation, with Sunday being the traditional day to rest before the new week starts.
