Ivan: Я думаю… может быть, суп? Да! Я хочу приготовить настоящий русский борщ.

Ivan: Я никогда не готовил борщ. Я думаю, это очень трудно, но я хочу попробовать.
(Ivan: I have never cooked borscht. I think it’s very difficult, but I want to try.)

Ivan: Я иду на кухню. Я открываю холодильник и смотрю. У меня есть картошка. Хорошо. Есть капуста и морковь. Тоже хорошо.
(Ivan: I go to the kitchen. I open the refrigerator and look. I have potatoes. Good. There’s cabbage and carrots. Also good.)

Ivan: А, вот свёкла! Это самый главный овощ для борща. Свёкла даёт борщу его красивый красный цвет. Отлично, у меня есть всё.
(Ivan: Ah, here’s the beet! This is the most important vegetable for borscht. The beet gives borscht its beautiful red color. Excellent, I have everything.)

Ivan: Но я не знаю рецепт. Мне нужна помощь. Конечно, я звоню бабушке. Бабушка знает всё о русской еде.
(Ivan: But I don’t know the recipe. I need help. Of course, I’m calling my grandmother. Grandma knows everything about Russian food.)

Ivan: «Алло, бабушка? Привет! Это Иван».
(Ivan: “Hello, Grandma? Hi! It’s Ivan.”)

Babushka: «Привет, Ваня! Как твои дела?» – говорит она.
(Babushka: “Hi, Vanya! How are you?” – she says.)

Ivan: «Всё хорошо. Бабушка, у меня вопрос. Я хочу приготовить борщ. Как это делать?»
(Ivan: “Everything is fine. Grandma, I have a question. I want to cook borscht. How do I do it?”)

Babushka: Бабушка очень рада. Она говорит: «Борщ? Это прекрасная идея! Слушай внимательно, это несложно».
(Babushka: Grandma is very happy. She says: “Borscht? That’s a wonderful idea! Listen carefully, it’s not difficult.”)

Ivan: Она рассказывает мне рецепт по телефону. Сначала нужна большая кастрюля и вода. Потом нужно резать овощи.
(Ivan: She tells me the recipe over the phone. First, you need a big pot and water. Then you need to chop the vegetables.)

Ivan: Я беру нож и начинаю резать картошку. Мой кот Борис сидит на стуле и смотрит на меня. Ему очень интересно.
(Ivan: I take a knife and start cutting the potatoes. My cat Boris is sitting on a chair and watching me. He’s very interested.)

Ivan: Потом я режу капусту, морковь и, конечно, свёклу. Свёкла очень красная. Теперь мои руки тоже красные. Это забавно.
(Ivan: Then I chop the cabbage, carrots and, of course, the beet. The beet is very red. Now my hands are red too. It’s funny.)

Ivan: Я кладу все овощи в кастрюлю с водой. Скоро моя кухня пахнет очень вкусно.
(Ivan: I put all the vegetables in the pot with water. Soon my kitchen smells very delicious.)

Ivan: Я жду почти час. Наконец, мой борщ готов! Он выглядит прекрасно. Такой яркий, красный суп.
(Ivan: I wait for almost an hour. Finally, my borscht is ready! It looks beautiful. Such a bright, red soup.)

Ivan: Я беру ложку и пробую. М-м-м, это очень вкусно! Я так горд. Я сам приготовил борщ!
(Ivan: I take a spoon and try it. Mmm, this is very tasty! I am so proud. I cooked borscht myself!)

Ivan: Теперь я хочу, чтобы моя подруга Аня тоже попробовала мой суп. Я звоню ей.
(Ivan: Now I want my friend Anya to try my soup too. I call her.)

Ivan: «Привет, Аня! Что делаешь?»

Anya: Мы садимся за стол. Аня берёт ложку, пробует… и её глаза становятся большими. «Иван… это невероятно! Это очень вкусно! Почти как у твоей бабушки!»

In Russian, when you want to express a desire to do something, you use the verb хочу (I want) followed by another verb in its infinitive (basic) form. The infinitive form usually ends in -ть. You can see this pattern many times in the video.

Here, the basic form of “sour cream” is сметана (smetana). When used with co, it changes to сметаной (smetanoy). You use the form со instead of c when the following word starts with a combination of consonants, making it easier to pronounce.
