🔍 Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two key points from the dialogue to help you talk about the days of the week.
1. Asking “What day is it?”
The most common way to ask about the day is the phrase Ivan uses: «Какой сегодня день?».
- Какой means “what” or “which.” It’s a question word used here because день (day) is a masculine noun.
- Сегодня means “today.”
- День means “day.”
To answer, you simply say «Сегодня…» followed by the day of the week. Example from the script:
Иван: Какой сегодня день?
Аня: Сегодня понедельник.
2. Russian Days of the Week
Here are the seven days of the week you learned in the dialogue. A key difference from English is that days of the week are not capitalized in Russian unless they begin a sentence.
- понедельник (Monday)
- вторник (Tuesday)
- среда (Wednesday)
- четверг (Thursday)
- пятница (Friday)
- суббота (Saturday)
- воскресенье (Sunday)
Anya also introduces the word выходные (vykhodnye), which means “weekend” and literally translates to “days off” or “exit days.” It refers to Saturday and Sunday together. Example from the script:
Аня: Суббота и воскресенье. Это выходные.
