(Anya: Oh, yes! Here is the bread. Is this bread good?)

Иван: Да, думаю, этот хлеб очень хороший. И свежий.
(Ivan: Yes, I think this bread is very good. And fresh.)

Аня: Отлично. Теперь нам нужно масло. Где масло?

Иван: Ах, да! Сыр! Где же сыр?
(Ivan: Ah, yes! Cheese! Where is the cheese?)

Аня: Я думаю, сыр там. Смотри, большой холодильник.
(Anya: I think the cheese is over there. Look, a big refrigerator.)

Иван: Точно! Вот сыр. Какой сыр ты хочешь? Этот жёлтый сыр?
(Ivan: Exactly! Here is the cheese. Which cheese do you want? This yellow cheese?)

Аня: Да, этот жёлтый сыр выглядит вкусно. Давай возьмём его.

🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two simple but very important structures used in the dialogue.

1. Asking “Where is…?” with Где?

The question word Где (gdye) means “Where?”. It’s one of the most useful words you can learn for navigating new places. You simply put Где before the noun you’re looking for. Anya and Ivan use it several times:

  • Где хлеб? (Where is the bread?)
  • Где масло? (Where is the butter?)
  • Где же сыр? (Where on earth is the cheese?) - The particle же adds emphasis.
  • Где здесь сок? (Where is the juice here?)

2. Expressing Need with “Нам нужно / нужен”

To say “we need,” Russian uses the dative pronoun нам (to us) followed by the word нужно (is needed). You’ll notice the ending of “need” sometimes changes. This is because it has to agree in gender with the noun that is needed.

  • Нам нужно масло. (We need butter.)
    • Масло is a neuter noun, so we use нужно.
  • Нам нужен хлеб. (We need bread.)
    • Хлеб is a masculine noun, so we use нужен.
  • Нам нужен сыр. (We need cheese.)
    • Сыр is also a masculine noun, so we use нужен.

When asking the general question “What do we need to buy?”, you use the neuter form: Что нам нужно купить?

🌍 Cultural Tip

In Russia, it is very common for supermarkets to have a dedicated section for fresh bread delivered daily. While modern self-service stores are the norm in cities, you might still find smaller “продукты” (grocery) shops where you ask a clerk behind the counter for specific items.
