1. Expressing Cause with “потому что” (because)

In Russian, to explain the reason for something, you use the conjunction потому что (potomu shto), which is the direct equivalent of “because” in English. It connects two clauses: the result and the reason.

In the dialogue, Babushka explains why Russians drink tea:

• Мы пьём чай, потому что это очень… хорошо. (We drink tea because it’s very… good.)

And later, she explains why her tea is the best:

• Потому что мой чай – с любовью. (Because my tea is made with love.)

2. Possession with “У + Genitive Case”

To say “I have,” “you have,” etc., Russian uses a different structure than English. Instead of a verb like “to have,” it uses the preposition у (u) followed by the person in the Genitive case. The literal meaning is closer to “by me, there is…”

• у + меня = I have (literally, “by me”)
• у + тебя = you have (literally, “by you”)

You can see this pattern twice in the dialogue:

• Иван: Бабушка, у меня есть вопрос. (Ivan: Grandma, I have a question.)
• Иван: У тебя всегда самый лучший чай. (Ivan: You always have the best tea.)

Notice how я (I) changes to меня and ты (you) changes to тебя after у. This is a fundamental concept for talking about possession in Russian.
