Иван: У меня есть идея. Давай смотреть фильм.

Аня: Фильм? Отлично! Это очень хорошая идея. Я люблю фильмы.

Let’s look at two simple but important grammar points from this dialogue.

1. Making Suggestions with “Давай”

When Ivan wants to suggest an activity, he uses the word Давай (davay), which means “Let’s.” This is a very common and friendly way to make a suggestion in informal situations. The structure is simple:

Давай + [infinitive verb]

You can see this pattern multiple times in the script:

• Давай смотреть фильм. (Let’s watch a movie.)
• Давай смотреть комедию. (Let’s watch a comedy.)
• Давай смотреть мультфильм! (Let’s watch a cartoon!)

Anya agrees enthusiastically by saying: Да! Давай! (Yes! Let’s do it!).

2. Using the Accusative Case for Direct Objects

When you say you want to watch something, like a movie genre, that genre becomes the direct object of the verb “смотреть” (to watch). In Russian, this requires the Accusative case.

Notice how some words change their endings:

• комедия (nominative) -> Я не хочу смотреть комедию (accusative).
• драма (nominative) -> Я не хочу смотреть драму (accusative).

For feminine nouns ending in -а, the ending changes to -у in the Accusative case.

However, some words don’t change:

• детектив (nominative) -> Я не хочу смотреть детектив (accusative).
• мультфильм (nominative) -> Давай смотреть мультфильм (accusative).

This is because детектив and мультфильм are masculine inanimate nouns. In the Accusative case, masculine inanimate nouns look the same as in the Nominative case. This is a fundamental concept for beginners!
