🔍 Grammar Focus

This dialogue is perfect for practicing two fundamental Russian grammar concepts: possessive pronouns and adjective agreement.

1. Possessive Pronouns: Мой / Моя (My)

In Russian, the word for “my” changes depending on the gender of the noun it describes. In this story, Ivan uses both мой (moy) and моя (moya).

  • Мой is used for masculine nouns (nouns that typically end in a consonant).

    • Это мой стол. (This is my desk.)
    • Это мой стул. (This is my chair.)
    • Это мой кот. (This is my cat.)
  • Моя is used for feminine nouns (nouns that typically end in -а or -я).

    • Это моя комната. (This is my room.)
    • Это моя лампа. (This is my lamp.)
    • Это моя кровать. (This is my bed.)

2. Adjective Agreement (Gender)

Just like “my,” adjectives in Russian must also agree with the gender of the noun they modify. Notice how the ending of the adjective changes.

  • Masculine adjectives often end in -ой or -ый.

    • Большой стол (A big desk)
    • Удобный стул (A comfortable chair)
    • Новый компьютер (A new computer)
  • Feminine adjectives often end in -ая.

    • Хорошая комната (A good room)
    • Жёлтая лампа (A yellow lamp)
    • Мягкая кровать (A soft bed)
  • Neuter adjectives often end in -ое.

    • Большое окно (A big window)

Anya points this out perfectly when she says: “Большой стол, большое окно, большой шкаф.”

🌍 Cultural Tip

In Russian culture, it is customary to remove your outdoor shoes immediately upon entering someone’s home to keep the living space clean. Most hosts will offer you “tapochki” (slippers) to wear while you are visiting as a gesture of hospitality.
