Ivan: Мой кот Борис спит на диване. Он всегда спит. Я иду к нему. «Борис, — говорю я, — с днём рождения!». Борис открывает один глаз. Потом он его закрывает. Он очень ленивый кот.
(Ivan: My cat Boris is sleeping on the couch. He is always sleeping. I go to him. “Boris,” I say, “happy birthday!”. Boris opens one eye. Then he closes it. He is a very lazy cat.)

Ivan: У меня есть идея. На день рождения нужна вечеринка. Я звоню моей подруге Ане.
(Ivan: I have an idea. A birthday needs a party. I call my friend Anya.)

Ivan: «Аня, привет! — говорю я. — Сегодня день рождения Бориса. Нам нужна вечеринка!»
(Ivan: “Anya, hi!” I say. “Today is Boris’s birthday. We need a party!”)

Anya: Аня смеётся по телефону. «Иван, коты не знают, что такое день рождения».
(Anya: Anya laughs on the phone. “Ivan, cats don’t know what a birthday is.”)

Ivan: «Борис — особенный кот, — говорю я. — Он знает. Пожалуйста, приходи на вечеринку. И принеси Персика!»

(Anya: “Hi, Ivan. Where is the birthday boy?” asks Anya.)

Ivan: Борис всё ещё на диване. Всё ещё спит. «Он отдыхает перед своей вечеринкой», — говорю я.
(Ivan: Boris is still on the couch. Still sleeping. “He is resting before his party,” I say.)

Ivan: Мы несём торт из тунца к дивану. Я пою маленькую песенку: «С днём рождения тебя, с днём рождения, дорогой Борис…»
(Ivan: We carry the tuna cake to the couch. I sing a little song: “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Boris…”)

Ivan: Аня смеётся. Персик видит тунец и очень интересуется. Он хочет его съесть. А Борис? Он просто смотрит на торт. Он нюхает. А потом он зевает и кладёт голову на лапы.
(Ivan: Anya laughs. Persik sees the tuna and is very interested. He wants to eat it. And Boris? He just looks at the cake. He sniffs. And then he yawns and lays his head on his paws.)

Ivan: Мне немного грустно. «Ему не нравится его вечеринка», — говорю я.
(Ivan: I’m a little sad. “He doesn’t like his party,” I say.)

Anya: «Может быть, ему нужен подарок», — говорит Аня. Она показывает мне новую игрушку. Это маленькая серая мышка.
(Anya: “Maybe he needs a gift,” says Anya. She shows me a new toy. It’s a small grey mouse.)

Anya: Аня даёт мышку Персику. Персик прыгает и играет с ней. Он очень счастлив.
