šŸ” Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two important grammar points from the conversation between JoĆ£o and Sofia.

1. Using “Gostar de” (To Like)

In Portuguese, to say you like something, you use the verb gostar followed by the preposition de. This is a very common structure.

  • gostar + de + [noun]

Notice how Sofia and João use it in the dialogue:

  • Sofia: Eu gosto de animais. (I like animals.)
  • JoĆ£o: Eu tambĆ©m gosto muito de animais. (I also like animals very much.)
  • JoĆ£o: Eu gosto muito de gatos. (I really like cats.)

When de is followed by a definite article like o or os, they combine:

  • de + o = do
  • de + os = dos

Example from the script:

  • JoĆ£o: Eu gosto do peixe azul. (I like the blue fish.) - here it’s a specific fish.

2. Adjective Agreement

In Portuguese, adjectives must “agree” with the nouns they describe. This means they change their ending to match the noun’s gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural). In this dialogue, all the animals are masculine singular nouns.

  • o cĆ£o (dog) is masculine.
  • o gato (cat) is masculine.
  • o peixe (fish) is masculine.

See how the adjectives end in -o to match:

  • Olha este cĆ£o pequeno. (Look at this small dog.)
  • O cĆ£o grande tambĆ©m Ć© muito bonito. (The big dog is also very beautiful.)
  • O peixe azul tambĆ©m Ć© muito bonito. (The blue fish is also very beautiful.)

If the noun were feminine, like a gata (the female cat), the adjective would change: a gata is bonit**a**.

šŸŒ Cultural Tip

In Portugal, dogs (cĆ£es) are the most popular pets, cherished for their companionship in both city apartments and country homes. It’s common to see people walking their dogs in parks and at outdoor cafĆ©s. Small pets like fish and birds are also popular, especially for families living in smaller spaces.
