š Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two simple but very useful grammar points from JoĆ£o and Sofia’s conversation.
1. Making Suggestions with “Vamos”
In Portuguese, one of the easiest ways to suggest an activity (“Let’s…” or “Shall we…?”) is by using the word vamos followed by a verb in its infinitive form (the basic, unconjugated form of the verb). You can see Sofia use this to propose the picnic.
- Sofia: Vamos fazer um piquenique no parque?
(Shall we have a picnic in the park?) - João: Vamos levar os nossos pastéis de nata favoritos.
(We’ll take / Let’s take our favorite custard tarts.)
This Vamos + [verb] structure is incredibly common and useful for making plans with friends.
2. Expressing Likes with “Gostar de”
When you want to say you like something in Portuguese, you use the verb gostar (to like). A key rule to remember is that it’s almost always followed by the preposition de. Think of it as “to like of something”.
Notice how it’s used in the dialogue:
- João: Eu gosto muito de pão com queijo.
(I really like bread with cheese.) - João: Tu gostas de maçãs?
(Do you like apples?) - Sofia: Gosto muito!
(I like them a lot!) - Note: Here, deis omitted because what she likes (maçãs) is already understood from the context of the conversation.
Remember to include de after gostar when you mention the thing you like.
