š Grammar Focus
This dialogue uses simple, fundamental Portuguese grammar. Let’s look at two key points.
1. Using ter (to have) and precisar de (to need)
In the conversation, Sofia and JoĆ£o frequently check which ingredients they have. They use the verb ter (to have) for this. Notice how the “nós” (we) form is used.
- Sofia: João, nós temos farinha? (João, do we have flour?)
- João: Sim, Sofia. Nós temos farinha. (Yes, Sofia. We have flour.)
- Sofia: Nós temos açúcar? (Do we have sugar?)
- João: Sim, temos açúcar. (Yes, we have sugar.)
They also talk about what they need using the phrase precisar de. This is a very common structure.
- Sofia: Precisamos dos ingredientes. (We need the ingredients.)
- Sofia: Primeiro, precisamos de farinha. (First, we need flour.)
- JoĆ£o: Para um bolo de chocolate… precisamos de chocolate! (For a chocolate cake… we need chocolate!)
2. Describing Things with de (of/from)
In Portuguese, the preposition de is used to show what something is made of or what type it is. It’s the equivalent of “’s” or “of” in English. In the dialogue, they are making a chocolate cake, which translates to bolo de chocolate.
When de is followed by a masculine article like o (the), they combine to form do.
- Example from script: A massa do bolo estĆ” bonita. (The cake’s batter looks nice.)
- This is a combination of: de + o bolo -> do bolo
If it were a feminine noun, like a casa (the house), it would combine to form da (de + a).
