š Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two important grammar points from JoĆ£o and Sofia’s conversation.
1. Adjective Agreement (Gender)
In Portuguese, nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine), and the adjectives that describe them must agree with that gender. In the dialogue, camisa (shirt) is a feminine noun. Notice how all the adjectives Sofia and João use to describe it end in -a.
- A camisa azul Ć© bonita. (The blue shirt is pretty.)
- A camisa amarela… Ć© muito amarela. (The yellow shirt… is very yellow.)
- A cor verde Ć© linda. (The color green is beautiful.)
- A camisa Ć© perfeita! (The shirt is perfect!)
If they were talking about a masculine noun, like o casaco (the coat), the adjectives would end in -o: O casaco Ć© bonit**o**.
2. Using the Verb “Gostar de” (To Like)
A very common point of confusion for English speakers is the Portuguese verb for “to like,” which is gostar de. You must always include the preposition de after the verb when followed by a noun or infinitive verb.
- João: Tu gostas de azul? (Do you like blue?)
- Sofia: Eu nĆ£o gosto muito da cor amarela. (I don’t really like the color yellow.)
In the second example, da is a contraction of the preposition de and the feminine article a (de + a = da). This is very common. You’ll see it used whenever you “like” a specific feminine thing.
- Eu gosto desta camisa verde. (I really like this green shirt.) Here, desta is a contraction of de + esta (of + this).

š” Key Takeaways
Here are the three most important things to remember from this lesson:
- Adjectives must agree: In Portuguese, make sure your adjectives match the gender of the noun they describe (e.g.,
a camis**a** perfeit**a**). - “Gostar de” is key: To say you like something, always use the verb
gostarfollowed by the prepositionde. For example, “Eu gosto de cafĆ©.” - Essential shopping phrases: Memorize phrases like
Eu preciso de...(I need…),Eu quero experimentar(I want to try on), andEu vou comprar(I’m going to buy) for your next shopping trip.
