šŸ” Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two important grammar points from the dialogue.

1. Expressing Likes with Gostar de

In Portuguese, when you want to say you like something, you use the verb gostar followed by the preposition de. This is different from English, where “to like” is used directly with the object.

Think of gostar de as meaning “to be fond of”.

Examples from the dialogue:

  • Eu gosto de ler. (I like to read.)
  • Eu gosto muito de carros. (I really like cars.)
  • Tu gostas muito de jardins. (You really like gardens.)

Remember to always include de after gostar when talking about what you like!

2. The Contraction Ć

You might have noticed the phrase “Vamos Ć  biblioteca” in the dialogue. The little accent mark on the Ć  is very important! It’s called a crase and it signifies the contraction of two words: the preposition a (to) and the feminine definite article a (the).

  • Preposition a (to) + Article a (the) = Ć

So, when JoĆ£o says “Vamos Ć  biblioteca?”, he is really saying “Vamos a + a biblioteca?”. This happens whenever you have a verb or phrase that requires the preposition a followed by a feminine noun that uses the article a.

šŸŒ Cultural Tip

Public libraries (bibliotecas pĆŗblicas) in Portugal are more than just places to borrow books; they are vital community and cultural centers. Many host free workshops, author readings, and art exhibitions, making them a great place to connect with local culture beyond the printed page.
