💬 Video Transcript

João: Olá, eu sou o João. No sábado, eu e a Sofia queríamos fazer uma coisa diferente. O dia estava bonito em Lisboa. Eu tive uma ideia. Eu disse: ‘Sofia, vamos dar um passeio no elétrico 28?’.
(João: Hello, I’m João. On Saturday, Sofia and I wanted to do something different. The day was beautiful in Lisbon. I had an idea. I said: ‘Sofia, shall we take a ride on Tram 28?’)

Sofia: Sim, João! É uma excelente ideia.
(Sofia: Yes, João! That’s an excellent idea.)

João: Nós fomos para a paragem do elétrico. Havia outras pessoas a esperar. O famoso elétrico amarelo chegou. Ele é antigo e muito charmoso. Entrámos e encontrámos dois lugares vazios perto de uma janela. O elétrico começou a viagem. As ruas de Lisboa são muito estreitas. Pela janela, nós vimos a cidade. Vimos as casas antigas e as lojas pequenas. A Sofia adora arte e tirou muitas fotografias com o seu telemóvel.
(João: We went to the tram stop. There were other people waiting. The famous yellow tram arrived. It is old and very charming. We got on and found two empty seats near a window. The tram started its journey. The streets of Lisbon are very narrow. Through the window, we saw the city. We saw the old houses and the small shops. Sofia loves art and took many pictures with her phone.)

Sofia: Lisboa é tão bonita daqui de cima!
(Sofia: Lisbon is so beautiful from up here!)

João: O passeio foi muito divertido. O elétrico subia e descia as colinas. Nós rimos muito. Depois de algum tempo, decidimos sair numa paragem no bairro da Graça. Nós não conhecemos muito bem este bairro.
(João: The ride was a lot of fun. The tram went up and down the hills. We laughed a lot. After some time, we decided to get off at a stop in the Graça neighborhood. We don’t know this neighborhood very well.)

João: ‘Vamos explorar?’, eu perguntei.
(João: ‘Shall we explore?’, I asked.)

Sofia: Claro!
(Sofia: Of course!)

João: Caminhámos pelas ruas e encontrámos um pequeno café com uma esplanada. Sentámo-nos ao sol. Eu pedi um sumo de laranja e a Sofia pediu um chá. Foi um dia simples, mas perfeito.
(João: We walked through the streets and found a small café with an outdoor terrace. We sat in the sun. I ordered an orange juice and Sofia ordered a tea. It was a simple, but perfect day.)

🔍 Grammar Focus

This story is a great example of how to talk about past events in Portuguese. Let’s look at the main tense used: the Pretérito Perfeito Simples.

The Simple Past Tense (Pretérito Perfeito Simples)

This tense is used to describe actions that were completed at a specific point in the past. It’s the most common way to tell a story or recount events. Throughout the video, João uses this tense to narrate what he and Sofia did.

Notice the different endings for “eu” (I) and “nós” (we).

Examples from the script:

  • Eu tive uma ideia. (I had an idea.)
  • Eu disse: ‘Sofia, vamos…’. (I said: ‘Sofia, let’s…’)
  • Nós fomos para a paragem. (We went to the stop.)
  • Nós vimos a cidade. (We saw the city.)
  • A Sofia tirou muitas fotografias. (Sofia took many pictures.)
  • Eu pedi um sumo de laranja. (I ordered an orange juice.)

These are all single, completed actions that form the sequence of the story.

Ser vs. Estar in the Past (Pretérito Perfeito vs. Imperfeito)

In Portuguese, describing things in the past requires choosing between different past tenses of ser (to be, permanent) and estar (to be, temporary).

  1. Describing a condition (Imperfect): O dia **estava** bonito em Lisboa.

    • Here, estava (from estar) is used because the weather was a temporary condition or background setting for the story. It describes how the day was at that time.
  2. Describing the nature of an event (Simple Past): O passeio **foi** muito divertido.

    • Here, foi (from ser) is used to describe the essential characteristic of the completed event. The ride is over, and its nature was “fun.”

🌍 Cultural Tip

Lisbon’s iconic yellow trams, or elétricos, are more than just transport; they’re a symbol of the city. The Tram 28 route is particularly famous because it winds through many of Lisbon’s most historic and picturesque neighborhoods, like Graça and Alfama, offering a scenic tour for the price of a regular ticket. Riding it is a quintessential Lisbon experience for both tourists and locals.

💡 Key Takeaways

Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • Making Suggestions: Use Vamos + [verb] to suggest an activity, like Vamos dar um passeio? (Shall we take a ride?).
  • Narrating in the Past: The Pretérito Perfeito is your go-to tense for telling stories about completed actions (e.g., Eu tive, nós fomos, ela tirou).
  • Key Sightseeing Vocabulary: Remember words like o elétrico (tram), o bairro (neighborhood), a paragem (stop), and a esplanada (terrace).
  • Describing a Scene: Use ser for permanent qualities (As ruas de Lisboa **são** muito estreitas) and estar for temporary states (O dia **estava** bonito).
