π Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two important grammar points from the dialogue.
1. Present Progressive: -κ³ μλ€ (-go itda)
This grammar pattern is used to express an action that is currently in progress, just like “-ing” in English. You form it by attaching -κ³ μλ€ to a verb stem.
In the dialogue, you see two examples:
μ± μ μ½κ³ μμμ΄. (I was reading a book.)
- Here, Seoyeon uses the past tense of μλ€ (μμμ΄) to say what she was doing when Minjun called.
- Verb stem: μ½ (from μ½λ€ - to read) + κ³ μμμ΄
μΉμ¦κ° λ³΄κ³ μμ΄! (Cheese is looking!)
- Minjun uses the present tense to describe what Cheese is doing right at that moment.
- Verb stem: 보 (from λ³΄λ€ - to see/look) + κ³ μμ΄
2. Asking for a Favor: -μ/μ΄ μ€ (-a/eo jwo)
When you want to ask a friend to do something for you in an informal way, you can use this pattern. You attach it to a verb stem. It literally means “give me the action of…”
- If the last vowel of the verb stem is γ or γ , you use -μ μ€.
- If it’s any other vowel, you use -μ΄ μ€.
- For νλ€ verbs, it becomes -ν΄ μ€.
The key example from our script is when Minjun asks for help:
- λ μ’ λμμ€. (Help me out a bit.)
- The verb is λλ€ (to help). Its stem λ changes to λμ before adding μ€. This is a common irregular verb pattern.
Another example from the script is Seoyeon’s offer:
- λ΄κ° λ§μλ μ¬κ³Ό μ£Όμ€ λ§λ€μ΄ μ€κ². (I’ll make you some delicious apple juice.)
- Here, λ§λ€μ΄ μ£Όλ€ (to make for someone) is combined with the future tense
-γΉκ²to make a promise.
- Here, λ§λ€μ΄ μ£Όλ€ (to make for someone) is combined with the future tense

π‘ Key Takeaways
Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:
- To ask what someone is doing, you can say μ§κΈ λ ν΄? (What are you doing now?).
- To describe an ongoing action, add -κ³ μλ€ to a verb stem (e.g.,
μκ³ μμ΄- is sleeping). - To ask a friend for help or a favor, use the -μ/μ΄ μ€ pattern, like in λμμ€ (Help me).
- When things are not going well, you can say something is μ΄μν΄μ (it’s strange) or μ΄λ €μμ (it’s difficult).
- A simple, friendly way to say “thank you” is κ³ λ§μ, and a good reply is μ²λ§μ.
