πŸ” Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two useful grammar patterns from the story.

1. Expressing Desire: Verb Stem + -κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš”

When you want to say “I want to do…” something in Korean, you can use the ~κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš” (~go sip-eo-yo) ending. You simply take the stem of a verb and attach -κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš”.

In the story, Seoyeon realizes what Nabi wants:

  • μ•„, λ‚˜λΉ„λŠ” 밖에 λ‚˜κ°€κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš”. (Ah, Nabi wants to go outside.)

Here, the verb is λ‚˜κ°€λ‹€ (to go out). We take the stem λ‚˜κ°€ and add κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš” to get λ‚˜κ°€κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš”.

Here are a few more examples:

  • λ¨Ήλ‹€ (to eat) β†’ λ¨Ήκ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš” (I want to eat)
  • 보닀 (to see/watch) β†’ 보고 μ‹Άμ–΄μš” (I want to see/watch)

2. Connecting Nouns: (이)ν•˜κ³

The particle (이)ν•˜κ³  is a friendly, conversational way to say “and” or “with” when connecting nouns. You use ν•˜κ³  if the noun ends in a vowel, and μ΄ν•˜κ³  if it ends in a consonant, but in speech, ν•˜κ³  is very common for both.

In the story, Seoyeon decides that playing with Nabi is also important:

  • ν•˜μ§€λ§Œ λ‚˜λΉ„ν•˜κ³  λ…ΈλŠ” 것도 μ€‘μš”ν•΄μš”. (But playing with Nabi is also important.)

Here, ν•˜κ³  connects “Nabi” to the action of “playing,” meaning “playing with Nabi.” You could also use it to list things, like “κ³ μ–‘μ΄ν•˜κ³  강아지” (a cat and a dog).

🌍 Cultural Tip

The cat’s name, Nabi (λ‚˜λΉ„), literally means “butterfly” and is one of the most classic and common names for cats in Korea. While pet ownership has rapidly increased in recent decades, traditionally, dogs were far more common as pets than cats. Today, cats are beloved companions for many, especially younger Koreans living in apartments.

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways

Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • You can describe someone or something’s personality with adjectives like λ˜‘λ˜‘ν•΄μš” (smart), ν™œλ°œν•΄μš” (active), and κ²Œμ„λŸ¬μš” (lazy).
  • To express that you want to do an action, add -κ³  μ‹Άμ–΄μš” to a verb stem (e.g., 놀고 μ‹Άμ–΄μš” - I want to play).
  • Use the particle ν•˜κ³  after a noun to mean “with” in a conversational way (e.g., λ‚˜λΉ„ν•˜κ³  놀닀 - to play with Nabi).
  • The phrase ~λŠ” 것 κ°™μ•„μš” can be used to say “It seems like…” or “I think that…” as when Seoyeon guesses what Nabi is saying.
