π Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two useful grammar patterns from the story.
1. Expressing Desire: Verb Stem + -κ³ μΆμ΄μ
When you want to say “I want to do…” something in Korean, you can use the ~κ³ μΆμ΄μ (~go sip-eo-yo) ending. You simply take the stem of a verb and attach -κ³ μΆμ΄μ.
In the story, Seoyeon realizes what Nabi wants:
- μ, λλΉλ λ°μ λκ°κ³ μΆμ΄μ. (Ah, Nabi wants to go outside.)
Here, the verb is λκ°λ€ (to go out). We take the stem λκ° and add κ³ μΆμ΄μ to get λκ°κ³ μΆμ΄μ.
Here are a few more examples:
- λ¨Ήλ€ (to eat) β λ¨Ήκ³ μΆμ΄μ (I want to eat)
- λ³΄λ€ (to see/watch) β λ³΄κ³ μΆμ΄μ (I want to see/watch)
2. Connecting Nouns: (μ΄)νκ³
The particle (μ΄)νκ³ is a friendly, conversational way to say “and” or “with” when connecting nouns. You use νκ³ if the noun ends in a vowel, and μ΄νκ³ if it ends in a consonant, but in speech, νκ³ is very common for both.
In the story, Seoyeon decides that playing with Nabi is also important:
- νμ§λ§ λλΉνκ³ λ Έλ κ²λ μ€μν΄μ. (But playing with Nabi is also important.)
Here, νκ³ connects “Nabi” to the action of “playing,” meaning “playing with Nabi.” You could also use it to list things, like “κ³ μμ΄νκ³ κ°μ짔 (a cat and a dog).

π‘ Key Takeaways
Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:
- You can describe someone or something’s personality with adjectives like
λλν΄μ(smart),νλ°ν΄μ(active), andκ²μλ¬μ(lazy). - To express that you want to do an action, add
-κ³ μΆμ΄μto a verb stem (e.g.,λκ³ μΆμ΄μ- I want to play). - Use the particle
νκ³after a noun to mean “with” in a conversational way (e.g.,λλΉνκ³ λλ€- to play with Nabi). - The phrase
~λ κ² κ°μμcan be used to say “It seems like…” or “I think that…” as when Seoyeon guesses what Nabi is saying.
