πŸ” Grammar Focus

Let’s break down two important grammar patterns you heard in the story.

1. Talking About the Past: -μ•˜/μ—ˆ/ν–ˆμ–΄μš”

You probably noticed that many verbs ended in -ν–ˆμ–΄μš” or -μ—ˆμ–΄μš”. This is the standard way to talk about something that happened in the past in Korean.

The ending you use depends on the last vowel of the verb stem:

  • If the last vowel is ㅏ or γ…—, you add -μ•˜μ–΄μš”.
  • If the last vowel is anything else (like γ…“, γ…œ, γ…£), you add -μ—ˆμ–΄μš”.
  • For verbs that end in ν•˜λ‹€, they become -ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.

Let’s look at some examples from the script:

  • μ’‹λ‹€ (to be good) -> μ’‹ + μ•˜μ–΄μš” -> μ’‹μ•˜μ–΄μš”. (The weather was nice.)
  • μ°Ύλ‹€ (to find) -> μ°Ύ + μ•˜μ–΄μš” -> μ°Ύμ•˜μ–΄μš”. (Seoyeon found a video.)
  • μšΈλ¦¬λ‹€ (to ring) -> 울렸 + μ–΄μš” -> μšΈλ Έμ–΄μš”. (The doorbell rang.)
  • 웃닀 (to laugh) -> 웃 + μ—ˆμ–΄μš” -> μ›ƒμ—ˆμ–΄μš”. (Seoyeon laughed.)
  • 끄닀 (to turn off) -> 껐 + μ–΄μš” -> κ»μ–΄μš”. (We turned off the video.)

2. Ongoing Actions: -κ³  μžˆλ‹€

When you want to say that someone is in the middle of doing something (like the English “-ing”), you use the –고 μžˆλ‹€ pattern. You attach –고 μžˆλ‹€ to the verb stem.

In the story, Seoyeon asks Minjun:

  • “뭐 ν•˜κ³  μžˆμ–΄?” (What are you doing?)

Minjun replies:

  • “응, 쉬고 μžˆμ–΄.” (Yeah, I’m resting.)
  • “μΉ˜μ¦ˆλ„ 쉬고 μžˆμ–΄.” (Cheese is resting too.)

You can also use this in the past tense to describe what someone was doing. You just conjugate μžˆλ‹€ to the past tense, μžˆμ—ˆμ–΄μš”.

  • “μ €λŠ” κ·Έλƒ₯ μ†ŒνŒŒμ— λˆ„μ›Œ μžˆμ—ˆμ–΄μš”.” (I was just lying on the sofa.)
  • “μΉ˜μ¦ˆλŠ” 제 λ°° μœ„μ—μ„œ 자고 μžˆμ—ˆμ–΄μš”.” (Cheese was sleeping on my stomach.)

🌍 Cultural Tip

The term ‘ν™ˆνŠΈ’ (hom-teu), short for ‘ν™ˆνŠΈλ ˆμ΄λ‹’ (home training), is extremely popular in modern Korea. Many people, due to busy schedules or convenience, follow exercise videos on platforms like YouTube, just as Seoyeon suggests. This trend highlights a shift towards incorporating wellness into daily life, even from the comfort of one’s own home.

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways

Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • Past Tense: To talk about the past, add -μ•˜μ–΄μš” (for ㅏ/γ…— vowels) or -μ—ˆμ–΄μš” (for other vowels) to verb stems. ν•˜λ‹€ verbs become -ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.
  • Continuous Actions: Use -κ³  μžˆλ‹€ (present) or -κ³  μžˆμ—ˆμ–΄μš” (past) to describe an action that is or was in progress.
  • Making Suggestions: You can suggest an activity with a friend casually by adding -자 to a verb stem, like in μš΄λ™ν•˜μž (Let’s work out).
  • Vocabulary: You learned useful words for everyday life, such as μš΄λ™ (exercise), ν”Όκ³€ν•˜λ‹€ (to be tired), 친ꡬ (friend), and 고양이 (cat).
