π Grammar Focus
Let’s break down two important grammar patterns used in the conversation.
1. Expressing Desire: Verb Stem + -κ³ μΆμ΄μ
When you want to say “I want to…” in Korean, you can use the grammar pattern -κ³ μΆμ΄μ (go sip-eo-yo). You simply take a verb, remove the final λ€ (da) from its dictionary form, and attach -κ³ μΆμ΄μ.
Minjun uses this pattern several times:
μ μΈ λ₯Ό μ¬κ³ μΆμ΄μ.(I want to buy a shirt.)- Here,
μ¬λ€(to buy) becomesμ¬-+κ³ μΆμ΄μ.
- Here,
νλμ μ μΈ λ₯Ό μ¬κ³ μΆμ΄μ.(I want to buy a blue shirt.)
Seoyeon also uses it to ask Minjun a question:
μ΄λ€ μ μΈ λ₯Ό μ¬κ³ μΆμ΄μ?(What kind of shirt do you want to buy?)
2. Asking if Something Suits You: -νν
μ μ΄μΈλ €μ
This is a very useful phrase when shopping for clothes or accessories. μ μ΄μΈλ €μ (jal eo-ul-lyeo-yo) means “it suits well” or “it looks good on.” To specify who it looks good on, you use the particle -νν
(hante) after a person’s name or a pronoun.
In the dialogue:
λ―Όμ€ μ¨νν μ μ΄μΈλ¦΄ κ±°μμ.(It will suit you well, Minjun.)- Seoyeon is telling Minjun that the shirt will look good on him.
μ νν μ μ΄μΈλ €μ?(Does it suit me well?)- Seoyeon asks Minjun for his opinion about the hat.
μ is the humble form of “I” or “me”.
- Seoyeon asks Minjun for his opinion about the hat.
