💬 Video Transcript
민준 (Minjun): 저는 친구 서연이와 집에 있었어요. 우리는 조금 지루했어요. 창문은 열려 있었어요. 날씨는 좋았지만, 우리는 안에 있고 싶었어요.
(Minjun: I was at home with my friend Seoyeon. We were a little bored. The window was open. The weather was nice, but we wanted to stay inside.)
민준 (Minjun): 책상 위에 종이가 보였어요. 좋은 생각이 떠올랐죠. “서연아, 우리 종이비행기 만들자!” 저는 말했어요.
(Minjun: I saw some paper on the desk. A good idea came to me. “Seoyeon, let’s make paper airplanes!” I said.)
서연 (Seoyeon): 민준아, 그거 정말 좋은 생각인데!
(Seoyeon: Minjun, that’s a really good idea!)
민준 (Minjun): 저는 파란색 종이를 집었어요. 서연이는 노란색을 골랐고요. 우리는 바닥에 앉아 접기 시작했어요. 제 비행기는 컸어요. 아주 빨리 날 거라고 생각했죠. 서연이 비행기는 작고 뾰족했어요.
(Minjun: I picked up the blue paper. Seoyeon chose yellow. We sat on the floor and started folding. My airplane was big. I thought it would fly very fast. Seoyeon’s airplane was small and pointy.)
민준 (Minjun): “자, 시합할 준비 됐어?” 저는 물었어요.
(Minjun: “Okay, are you ready for a contest?” I asked.)
서연 (Seoyeon): 응! 누가 더 멀리 날리나 보자.
(Seoyeon: Yep! Let’s see who can fly it farther.)
민준 (Minjun): 우리는 일어섰어요. “하나, 둘, 셋, 출발!” 우리는 동시에 종이비행기를 던졌어요. 제 파란색 비행기는 방을 가로질러 날아갔어요. 빨랐죠. 하지만 서연이의 노란색 비행기가 제 비행기를 지나쳐 날아갔어요. 조금 더 멀리 갔어요. “와, 네가 이겼다!” 저는 말했어요.
(Minjun: We stood up. “One, two, three, go!” We threw the paper airplanes at the same time. My blue airplane flew across the room. It was fast. But Seoyeon’s yellow airplane flew past mine. It went a little farther. “Wow, you won!” I said.)
민준 (Minjun): 우리는 한 번 더 날리기로 했어요. 그런데 그때, 제 고양이 치즈가 낮잠에서 깨어났어요. 공중에 날아다니는 비행기를 봤죠. 치즈의 눈이 아주 커졌어요.
(Minjun: We decided to fly them one more time. But just then, my cat Cheese woke up from his nap. He saw the airplanes flying in the air. Cheese’s eyes got very big.)
민준 (Minjun): 저는 파란색 비행기를 다시 던졌어요. 이번에는 치즈가 갑자기 점프했어요! 앞발로 잡으려고 했죠. 정말 웃겼어요. 그리고 서연이가 노란색 비행기를 던졌어요. 치즈는 달려가서 공중에서 그걸 잡았어요. 비행기를 가지고 바닥에 착지해서 가지고 놀기 시작했어요.
(Minjun: I threw the blue airplane again. This time, Cheese suddenly jumped! He tried to catch it with his front paws. It was really funny. Then Seoyeon threw the yellow airplane. Cheese ran and caught it in mid-air. He landed on the floor with the airplane and started playing with it.)
서연 (Seoyeon): 내 생각엔 치즈가 진짜 승자 같아.
(Seoyeon: I think Cheese is the real winner.)
민준 (Minjun): 서연이와 저는 서로를 보고 웃었어요. 저도 동의했어요. 종이비행기 놀이는 간단했지만, 정말 즐거운 오후였어요.
(Minjun: Seoyeon and I looked at each other and laughed. I agreed. Playing with paper airplanes was simple, but it was a really fun afternoon.)

🔍 Grammar Focus
This story uses some fundamental grammar patterns perfect for beginner learners. Let’s look at two of them.
1. The Past Tense: -았/었/했어요
Throughout the story, Minjun is describing events that already happened. In Korean, you create the simple past tense by attaching -았어요, -었어요, or -했어요 to the verb stem.
The rule is:
- If the last vowel in the verb stem is ㅏ or ㅗ, you add -았어요.
- If the last vowel is anything else (ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅣ, etc.), you add -었어요.
- For verbs that end in 하다 (hada), it becomes -했어요.
Let’s see some examples from the script:
- 날씨는 좋았지만… (The weather was good, but…) - Verb stem 좋다 (jota) has ㅗ, so it becomes 좋았어요.
- 저는 파란색 종이를 집었어요. (I picked up the blue paper.) - Verb stem 집다 (jipta) has ㅣ, so it becomes 집었어요.
- 우리는 동시에 종이비행기를 던졌어요. (We threw the paper airplanes…) - Verb 던지다 (deonjida) contracts to 던졌어요.
- 정말 즐거운 오후였어요. (It was a really fun afternoon.) - This comes from 이다 (ida, to be).
2. Making Suggestions: -자
When Minjun gets his idea, he says to his friend Seoyeon, “우리 종이비행기 만들자!”.
The verb ending -자 is an informal and friendly way to make a suggestion, like “Let’s…” in English. You use it with close friends or people of the same age or younger. You simply attach -자 to the verb stem.
- Example from the script: 만들다 (mandeulda, to make) → 만들자 (mandeulja, Let’s make!)
Here are a few more examples:
- 가다 (gada, to go) → 가자! (Gaja! - Let’s go!)
- 먹다 (meokda, to eat) → 먹자! (Meokja! - Let’s eat!)
