πŸ” Grammar Focus

Let’s break down two important grammar patterns you heard in the conversation.

1. Making Suggestions with -(으)γ„ΉκΉŒμš”?

When Seoyeon is bored, she asks Minjun, “우리 뭐 ν• κΉŒμš”?” (What should we do?). This -(으)γ„ΉκΉŒμš”? ending is used to make a suggestion or ask for someone’s opinion about a future action.

It attaches directly to a verb stem:

  • If the verb stem ends in a vowel, you add -γ„ΉκΉŒμš”?.
    • ν•˜λ‹€ (to do) β†’ ν•˜ + γ„ΉκΉŒμš”? β†’ ν• κΉŒμš”?
  • If the verb stem ends in a consonant, you add -μ„κΉŒμš”?.
    • λ¨Ήλ‹€ (to eat) β†’ λ¨Ή + μ„κΉŒμš”? β†’ λ¨Ήμ„κΉŒμš”? (Should we eat?)

You’ll see it again when Seoyeon asks, “이제 뭐 λ§Œλ“€κΉŒμš”?” (Now what should we make?).

2. Describing Nouns with Colors

Notice how Minjun and Seoyeon describe the things they make. The pattern is very simple in Korean: just place the color word before the noun.

  • λ…Έλž€μƒ‰ 클레이 (yellow clay)
  • 빨간색 사과 (red apple)
  • νŒŒλž€μƒ‰ 고양이 (blue cat)
  • ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰ 강아지 (white puppy)

In Korean, the word 색 means “color.” So 빨간색 literally means “red color.” You can combine these color words with any noun to describe it.

🌍 Cultural Tip

In Korea, colors carry traditional meanings derived from the theory of yin and yang and the five elements. For instance, red (빨간색) symbolizes passion and good fortune, which is why it’s used for good luck charms. Blue (νŒŒλž€μƒ‰) represents new beginnings and freshness, while white (ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰) traditionally symbolizes purity and truth.

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways

Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • To say you’re bored, you can use the phrase μ‹¬μ‹¬ν•΄μš”.
  • To make a suggestion or ask “What should we do?”, use the pattern -(으)γ„ΉκΉŒμš”? as in 뭐 ν• κΉŒμš”?.
  • Basic Korean colors include 빨간색 (red), λ…Έλž€μƒ‰ (yellow), νŒŒλž€μƒ‰ (blue), and ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰ (white).
  • To describe something with a color, simply put the color word before the noun, like in ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰ 강아지 (white puppy).
  • The verb λ§Œλ“€μ–΄μš” means “to make” and is useful for talking about creative activities.
