🔍 Grammar Focus
Let’s break down two important grammar points you heard in the conversation.
1. The Location and Direction Particle 에
In Korean, the particle 에 is attached to nouns to indicate a location, destination, or a point in time. In this dialogue, you see it used primarily for location and destination.
As a Destination (used with motion verbs like 가다 - to go):
When you’re talking about going to a place, you attach 에 to that place.
- Example from the script: 저는 지금 우체국에 가요. (I am going to the post office now.)
- Example from the script: 우리 같이 우체국에 가요. (Let’s go to the post office together.)
As a Static Location (where something is or happens):
에 can also show where something is located or where an action takes place, similar to “at” or “in”.
- Example from the script: 저는 편지에 우표를 붙여요. (I stick a stamp on the letter.)
- Example from the script: 이제 편지를 우체통에 넣어요. (Now, let’s put the letters in the mailbox.)
2. The Standard Polite Ending: -아요 / -어요
You’ll notice that almost every verb and adjective in the dialogue ends in -요 (yo). This is the standard polite ending used in everyday conversations in Korean. It’s respectful but also friendly. The form changes slightly depending on the last vowel of the verb stem.
- If the last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, you add
-아요.- 가다 (to go) -> 가 + 아요 -> 가요
- 사다 (to buy) -> 사 + 아요 -> 사요
- If the last vowel is anything else, you add
-어요.- 있다 (to have/exist) -> 있 + 어요 -> 있어요
- 붙이다 (to attach) -> 붙이 + 어요 -> 붙여요
- For verbs ending in 하다 (to do), it becomes 해요.
- 필요하다 (to be necessary) -> 필요해요
This -요 ending is essential for speaking natural and polite Korean.
