🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s break down two important grammar patterns you heard in the conversation.

1. Expressing Desire: Verb Stem + -고 싶어

When you want to say “I want to…” in Korean, you can use the -고 싶어 (-go sipeo) ending. You simply attach it to the stem of a verb.

In the dialogue, Seoyeon asks Minjun what he wants to drink:

  • 민준은 뭐 마시고 싶어? (What do you want to drink, Minjun?)
    • Here, 마시다 (to drink) becomes 마시 + 고 싶어.

Later, when the cake arrives, she expresses her excitement:

  • 빨리 먹고 싶다. (I want to eat it soon.)
    • Here, 먹다 (to eat) becomes + 고 싶다. (-고 싶다 is a more declarative form of -고 싶어).

2. Stating Intention: Verb Stem + -(으)ㄹ게

When you decide to do something and want to express that intention to the listener, you can use the -(으)ㄹ게 (-eulge / -lge) ending. It’s like saying “I’ll do…” or “I’m going to do…” as a commitment or response.

  • If the verb stem ends in a vowel, you add ㄹ게.
  • If the verb stem ends in a consonant, you add 을게.

We see this when Seoyeon decides on her drink:

  • 나는 오렌지 주스 마실게. (I’ll have orange juice.)
    • The stem of 마시다 is 마시, which ends in a vowel. So, we add ㄹ게 to the bottom, making 마실게.

Minjun uses it when he goes to place their order:

  • 그럼 주문할게. (Okay, I’ll order then.)
    • The stem of 주문하다 (to order) is 주문하, which ends in a vowel. So, we add ㄹ게 to get 주문할게.

🌍 Cultural Tip

Cafés (카페) are a huge part of modern Korean culture, serving as popular spots for studying, socializing, and even business meetings. Many cafés in Korea are independently owned and feature unique themes and aesthetics, making ‘café hopping’ a popular hobby. Don’t be surprised to see people spending hours in a single café with just one drink!

💡 Key Takeaways

Here are the main points to remember from this lesson:

  • To ask what someone wants, use phrases like 뭐 마시고 싶어? (What do you want to drink?).
  • Express your own desire by attaching -고 싶어 to a verb stem, like 케이크 먹고 싶어 (I want to eat cake).
  • State your decision or intention with -(으)ㄹ게, such as 나는 오렌지 주스 마실게 (I’ll have orange juice).
  • Use 더 좋아해 to say you like something more, and 제일 좋아해 to say you like something the most.
  • The phrase 맛있겠다 is a great way to react when you see food that looks appetizing.
