🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two simple but very important grammar points from the dialogue.

1. Describing Things: The -아요/어요 Ending

In Korean, verbs and adjectives conjugate to end in -아요 (a-yo) or -어요 (eo-yo) in the standard present tense. This is one of the most common sentence endings you’ll hear.

The rule is based on the last vowel of the word stem:

  • If the last vowel is or , you add <strong>-아요</strong>.
  • If the last vowel is anything else (like ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅣ), you add <strong>-어요</strong>.
  • For stems ending in 하다 (hada), it becomes <strong>해요</strong> (haeyo).

Let’s see some examples from the script:

  • 좋아요 (It’s good): The stem is 좋- (joh-). The vowel is , so we add -아요.

    깨끗한 방, 좋<strong>아요</strong>. (A clean room, I like it.)

  • 있어요 (There is/are): The stem is 있- (iss-). The vowel is , so we add -어요.

책이 책장에 있<strong>어요</strong>. (The books are on the bookshelf.)

  • 깨끗해요 (It’s clean): The stem is 깨끗하- (kkaekkeut-ha-). Stems ending in 하다 become 해요.

이제 방이 정말 깨끗<strong>해요</strong>. (The room is really clean now.)

2. Identifying Nouns: Subject Particle 이/가

In Korean, particles are attached to nouns to show their function in a sentence. 이/가 is the subject particle, marking the “doer” of the action or the subject of a description.

  • Use (i) after a noun ending in a consonant.
  • Use (ga) after a noun ending in a vowel.

In the dialogue, Seoyeon says:

방<strong>이</strong> 정말 깨끗해요. (The room is really clean.)

Here, (bang) means “room” and ends in a consonant (ㅇ), so we attach . This clearly marks “the room” as the subject that is being described as clean.

Another example:

책<strong>이</strong> 책장에 있어요. (The books are on the bookshelf.)

(chaek) ends in a consonant (ㄱ), so we add .

🌍 Cultural Tip

In Korea, the concept of “대청소” (daecheongso), or “big cleaning,” is a significant cultural practice. Families often undertake a thorough deep clean of their homes before major holidays like Seollal (Lunar New Year) or Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) to welcome good fortune. It symbolizes a fresh start, clearing out the old to make way for the new.
