πŸ” Grammar Focus

Let’s break down two important grammar points from the dialogue.

1. Describing Things: Adjective + -λ„€μš” (-neyo)

When you observe or realize something new, you can add ~λ„€μš” to an adjective stem to express mild surprise or admiration. It’s a natural way to react to what you see.

In the dialogue, Seoyeon sees the large tree in the painting and exclaims:

  • λ‚˜λ¬΄κ°€ 정말 ν¬λ„€μš”. (namuga jeongmal keuneyo.) - The tree is really big!

This is more expressive than just saying “λ‚˜λ¬΄κ°€ μ»€μš”” (The tree is big). It shows she’s reacting in the moment. You can use it with many adjectives:

  • μ˜ˆμ˜λ‹€ (to be pretty) β†’ μ˜ˆμ˜λ„€μš”! (It’s so pretty!)
  • κ·€μ—½λ‹€ (to be cute) β†’ κ·€μ—½λ„€μš”! (It’s so cute!)
  • λ©‹μžˆλ‹€ (to be cool) β†’ λ©‹μžˆλ„€μš”! (It’s so cool!)

2. Expressing Likes: Noun + 이/κ°€ μ’‹μ•„μš” vs. Noun + 을/λ₯Ό μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”

In Korean, there are two common ways to say you like something, and they use different particles.

A) Subject + 이/κ°€ + μ’‹μ•„μš” This structure uses the descriptive verb μ’‹λ‹€ (to be good). The thing you like is the subject of the sentence. Literally, it means “To me, [Noun] is good.”

  • μ €λŠ” 이 그림이 μ’‹μ•„μš”. (jeoneun i geurimi joayo.) - I like this painting. (Lit: To me, this painting is good.)
  • 저도 이 그림이 μ’‹μ•„μš”. (jeodo i geurimi joayo.) - I like this painting, too.

B) Subject + 을/λ₯Ό + μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš” This structure uses the action verb μ’‹μ•„ν•˜λ‹€ (to like). The thing you like is the object of the verb. This is closer to the English structure “I like [Noun].”

  • μ €λŠ” 고양이λ₯Ό μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”. (jeoneun goyangireul joahaeyo.) - I like cats.
  • μ €λŠ” 빨간색을 μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”. (jeoneun ppalgansaegeul joahaeyo.) - I like red.

Both forms are correct and widely used, so it’s great to get familiar with them both!

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways

Here are the three most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • Essential Adjectives: You can describe most things with a few key words: 크닀 (big), μž‘λ‹€ (small), λ©‹μžˆλ‹€ (cool), κ·€μ—½λ‹€ (cute), and μ˜ˆλ»μš” (pretty).
  • Expressing Reactions: Add -λ„€μš” to an adjective stem (e.g., 크닀 β†’ ν¬λ„€μš”) to express your immediate reaction or feeling of surprise about something you see.
  • Saying What You Like: Remember the two ways to express preference: [Noun]이/κ°€ μ’‹μ•„μš” (This [noun] is good/I like it) and [Noun]을/λ₯Ό μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš” (I like [noun]).
