πŸ” Grammar Focus

This conversation uses two fundamental Korean grammar patterns: the present tense verb ending and particles for comparing topics.

1. Present Tense: -μ•„μš”/μ–΄μš”

This is the standard, polite way to conjugate verbs and adjectives in the present tense in Korean. The ending you use depends on the last vowel of the verb stem.

  • If the last vowel is ㅏ or γ…—, you add -μ•„μš”.

    • μ’‹λ‹€ (to be good) β†’ μ’‹ + μ•„μš” β†’ μ’‹μ•„μš”
    • μ•Œλ‹€ (to know) β†’ μ•Œ + μ•„μš” β†’ μ•Œμ•„μš”
  • If the last vowel is anything else (γ…“, γ…œ, γ…£, etc.), you add -μ–΄μš”.

    • λ“£λ‹€ (to listen) β†’ λ“€ + μ–΄μš” β†’ λ“€μ–΄μš” (Note: γ„· irregular verb)
    • μžˆλ‹€ (to exist) β†’ 있 + μ–΄μš” β†’ μžˆμ–΄μš”
  • If the stem ends in ν•˜λ‹€ (to do), it becomes ν•΄μš”.

    • μ‘°μš©ν•˜λ‹€ (to be quiet) β†’ μ‘°μš©ν•΄μš”
    • 뭐 ν•˜λ‹€ (to do what) β†’ 뭐 ν•΄μš”?

You can see this pattern throughout the script: “μŒμ•…μ„ λ“€μ–΄μš””, “K-pop μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš””, “λ…Έλž˜κ°€ μ‹ λ‚˜μš””.

2. Topic (-은/λŠ”) vs. Subject (-이/κ°€) Particles

Korean uses particles to mark the function of a noun in a sentence. -이/κ°€ marks the subject, while -은/λŠ” marks the topic, often for comparison or contrast.

Notice Seoyeon’s question and Minjun’s answer:

μ„œμ—°: 민쀀은 μ‹ λ‚˜λŠ” λ…Έλž˜κ°€ μ’‹μ•„μš”? μ‘°μš©ν•œ λ…Έλž˜κ°€ μ’‹μ•„μš”? (Seoyeon: As for you, Minjun, are exciting songs good? Or are quiet songs good?)

λ―Όμ€€: μ €λŠ” μ‹ λ‚˜λŠ” λ…Έλž˜κ°€ 더 μ’‹μ•„μš”. (Minjun: As for me, I like exciting songs more.)

Here, 민쀀은 and μ €λŠ” use -은/λŠ” to set “Minjun” and “I” as the main topic of the sentence. In contrast, λ…Έλž˜κ°€ uses -이/κ°€ to mark “songs” as the subject of the verb “to be good” (μ’‹μ•„μš”). This structure is very common when expressing opinions or comparing preferences.

🌍 Cultural Tip

K-pop is a global phenomenon, but ballads (λ°œλΌλ“œ) also hold a special place in the hearts of many Koreans. These emotional, slow-tempo songs are frequently featured in popular K-dramas, deeply weaving music into the storytelling culture. This mix of high-energy pop and heartfelt ballads reflects the diverse musical landscape you’ll encounter in Korea.

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways

Here are the most important points to remember from this lesson:

  • To say you are listening to music, you can use the phrase μŒμ•…μ„ λ“€μ–΄μš”.
  • You can describe music as μ‹ λ‚˜μš” (exciting/upbeat) or μ‘°μš©ν•΄μš” (quiet/calm).
  • To ask “what kind of…” you can use 무슨. For example, 무슨 μŒμ•… λ“€μ–΄μš”? (What music are you listening to?).
  • To suggest doing something together, add 같이 before a verb conjugated with -μ•„μš”/μ–΄μš”. For example, 같이 λ“€μ–΄μš”! (Let’s listen together!).
  • Use the Topic Marker (-은/λŠ”) + Subject Marker (-이/κ°€) pattern to state preferences: μ €λŠ” [Noun]κ°€ μ’‹μ•„μš” (As for me, I like [Noun]).
