Léo: Bonjour, c’est Léo. Cet après-midi, j’ai une super idée. Je décide de devenir un grand magicien. Chloé est à la maison, elle lit un livre dans le salon. Mon chat, Ombre, dort sur une chaise. L’ambiance est très calme. C’est le moment parfait pour la magie.
(Léo: Hello, it’s Léo. This afternoon, I have a great idea. I decide to become a great magician. Chloé is at home, she is reading a book in the living room. My cat, Ombre, is sleeping on a chair. The atmosphere is very calm. It’s the perfect moment for magic.)

Léo: Je dis à Chloé : « Chloé, regarde-moi ! Je vais faire un tour de magie incroyable. » Elle sourit et pose son livre. Je prends une petite pièce jaune et un gobelet en plastique rouge. Je suis prêt.
(Léo: I say to Chloé: “Chloé, look at me! I’m going to do an incredible magic trick.” She smiles and puts down her book. I take a small yellow coin and a red plastic cup. I am ready.)

Léo: Je pose la pièce sur la table. Je dis d’une voix mystérieuse : « Maintenant, la pièce va disparaître ! » Je couvre la pièce avec le gobelet rouge. Je dis les mots magiques : « Hocus pocus ! » Je lève le gobelet. Oh. La pièce est toujours là. Bon, c’est mon premier essai.
(Léo: I place the coin on the table. I say in a mysterious voice: “Now, the coin will disappear!” I cover the coin with the red cup. I say the magic words: “Hocus pocus!” I lift the cup. Oh. The coin is still there. Well, it’s my first try.)

Léo: Je recommence. Je suis plus concentré. Je mets le gobelet sur la pièce. Je dis : « Abracadabra ! » Je lève le gobelet. La pièce est encore sur la table. Chloé rit doucement. Elle trouve ça amusant.
(Léo: I start again. I am more focused. I put the cup on the coin. I say: “Abracadabra!” I lift the cup. The coin is still on the table. Chloé laughs softly. She finds it amusing.)

Léo: Pour la troisième fois, je suis très sérieux. Je dis : « Attention, c’est la bonne fois ! » Je ne vois pas que Ombre est maintenant réveillé. Il marche doucement sous la table. Il est très curieux.
(Léo: For the third time, I am very serious. I say: “Watch out, this is the one!” I don’t see that Ombre is now awake. He is walking quietly under the table. He is very curious.)

Léo: Je ferme les yeux pour me concentrer. Je crie : « MAGIE ! » À ce moment, Ombre, avec sa petite patte noire, pousse la pièce. La pièce tombe de la table, sans un bruit.
(Léo: I close my eyes to concentrate. I shout: “MAGIC!” At that moment, Ombre, with his little black paw, pushes the coin. The coin falls from the table, without a sound.)

Léo: J’ouvre les yeux. Avec beaucoup de confiance, je lève le gobelet. Je regarde. La pièce n’est pas là ! Elle a disparu ! Je suis choqué. Je crie : « Chloé ! J’ai réussi ! C’est magique ! Je suis un vrai magicien ! »
(Léo: I open my eyes. With a lot of confidence, I lift the cup. I look. The coin is not there! It has disappeared! I am shocked. I shout: “Chloé! I did it! It’s magic! I am a real magician!”)

Léo: Chloé ne dit rien. Elle rit, elle rit beaucoup. Puis, elle montre le sol avec son doigt. Je regarde sous la table. Et je vois Ombre. Il joue avec ma pièce jaune. Le vrai magicien, c’est Ombre. Finalement, nous rions tous les deux. Mon tour de magie est un succès, mais pas grâce à moi.
(Léo: Chloé says nothing. She laughs, she laughs a lot. Then, she points to the floor with her finger. I look under the table. And I see Ombre. He is playing with my yellow coin. The real magician is Ombre. Finally, we both laugh. My magic trick is a success, but not thanks to me.)

🔍 Grammar Focus

In this story, Léo uses simple descriptive words. Let’s look at how adjectives work in French.

Basic Adjective Agreement

In French, adjectives must “agree” with the noun they describe. This means their spelling can change depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural. Most of the time, adjectives come after the noun.

Notice how the adjectives for color and size change to match the feminine nouns pièce (coin) and patte (paw).

 • Masculine Noun: un gobelet en plastique rouge (a red plastic cup)
 • Feminine Noun: une petite pièce jaune (a small yellow coin)
 • Feminine Noun: sa petite patte noire (his little black paw)

In these examples, an -e is added to petit and noir to make them feminine. Jaune and rouge already end in -e, so they don’t change between masculine and feminine singular forms. This is a fundamental rule you’ll see everywhere in French!

🌍 Cultural Tip

Magic shows, or spectacles de magie, are a popular form of entertainment in France for both children and adults. You can often find street magicians performing in tourist areas like Montmartre in Paris. The French have a rich history with illusion, even influencing the English word ‘conjurer’ from the Old French ‘conjuror’.
