Léo (narration): Je regarde la pièce de monnaie sur le sol. Puis, je regarde mon chat, Ombre. Chloé, mon amie, commence à rire. Elle rit beaucoup. Mon visage est un peu rouge.
(Léo (narration): I look at the coin on the floor. Then, I look at my cat, Ombre. Chloé, my friend, starts to laugh. She laughs a lot. My face is a little red.)
Léo: « Ah… alors, ce n’est pas de la magie », je dis. « C’est toi, Ombre ! »
(Léo: “Ah… so, it’s not magic,” I say. “It’s you, Ombre!”)
Léo (narration): Je pensais être un grand magicien. Mais non. Je suis juste un ami avec un chat rapide. Je suis un peu déçu.
(Léo (narration): I thought I was a great magician. But no. I’m just a friend with a fast cat. I am a little disappointed.)
Chloé: « Ne sois pas triste, Léo. C’est un tour de magie excellent ! Ombre est ton assistant. »
(Chloé: “Don’t be sad, Léo. It’s an excellent magic trick! Ombre is your assistant.”)
Léo (narration): Un assistant… J’aime cette idée ! Je regarde Ombre. Il se nettoie la patte. Il a l’air très fier.
(Léo (narration): An assistant… I like this idea! I look at Ombre. He is cleaning his paw. He looks very proud.)
Léo: « Ombre, mon assistant ! » je dis. « Nous avons besoin d’un autre tour de magie. Un tour plus difficile. »
(Léo: “Ombre, my assistant!” I say. “We need another magic trick. A more difficult trick.”)
Léo (narration): Je cherche un autre objet. Je trouve une petite balle rouge. C’est le jouet préféré d’Ombre. Parfait.
(Léo (narration): I look for another object. I find a small red ball. It’s Ombre’s favorite toy. Perfect.)
Léo: « Attention ! Pour notre prochain tour, le grand Ombre va faire disparaître cette balle ! »
(Léo: “Attention! For our next trick, the great Ombre will make this ball disappear!”)
Léo (narration): Je place la balle rouge sur le sol, devant Ombre. Je dis les mots magiques : « Abracadabra ! »
(Léo (narration): I place the red ball on the floor, in front of Ombre. I say the magic words: “Abracadabra!”)
Léo (narration): Ombre regarde la balle. Il s’approche lentement. Il touche la balle avec sa patte. La balle roule un peu. Ombre la pousse encore une fois. La balle roule vite… et elle va sous le canapé.
(Léo (narration): Ombre looks at the ball. He approaches slowly. He touches the ball with his paw. The ball rolls a little. Ombre pushes it one more time. The ball rolls fast… and it goes under the sofa.)
Léo: « Tu as vu ? La balle a disparu ! Ombre est un vrai magicien ! »
(Léo: “Did you see? The ball has disappeared! Ombre is a real magician!”)
Chloé: « Allons voir. »
(Chloé: “Let’s go see.”)
Léo (narration): Nous regardons sous le canapé. Ombre est là. La balle rouge est entre ses pattes. Il joue avec la balle. Il est très content. La balle n’a pas vraiment disparu.
(Léo (narration): We look under the sofa. Ombre is there. The red ball is between his paws. He is playing with the ball. He is very happy. The ball hasn’t really disappeared.)
Léo (narration): Je souris. Mon assistant n’est pas un grand magicien. C’est juste un chat joueur.
(Léo (narration): I smile. My assistant is not a great magician. He’s just a playful cat.)
Léo: « D’accord », je dis. « Ombre n’est pas un magicien. C’est une star ! »
(Léo: “Okay,” I say. “Ombre is not a magician. He’s a star!”)
Chloé: « Oui, c’est la star du spectacle. »
(Chloé: “Yes, he’s the star of the show.”)
Léo (narration): Nous applaudissons Ombre. Le chat regarde, il est surpris. Puis, il continue de jouer avec sa balle rouge. Finalement, être l’ami d’une star, c’est amusant aussi.
(Léo (narration): We applaud Ombre. The cat looks, he is surprised. Then, he continues to play with his red ball. In the end, being the friend of a star is fun too.)

🔍 Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two key grammar points from the story that are essential for French beginners.
1. The Negative Form: ne ... pas
To make a sentence negative in French, you typically wrap the verb with ne and pas. The basic structure is sujet + ne + verbe + pas. If the verb starts with a vowel, ne becomes n'.
You can see this pattern several times in the story:
- « …ce n’est pas de la magie. » (it is not magic)
- « Ne sois pas triste, Léo. » (Don’t be sad, Léo.) - This is the negative imperative (command) form.
- « La balle n’a pas vraiment disparu. » (The ball has not really disappeared.) - Note how
ne...paswraps around the auxiliary verbain the passé composé. - « Ombre n’est pas un magicien. » (Ombre is not a magician.)
2. Possessive Adjectives: mon, ton, son
Possessive adjectives show who owns something. In French, they must agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the noun they describe, not the owner.
The story uses several examples:
- mon chat: “my cat” (
chatis masculine singular) - mon amie: “my friend” (
amieis feminine singular, but we usemonbecauseamiestarts with a vowel sound to avoidma amie) - ton assistant: “your assistant” (
assistantis masculine singular) - sa patte: “his/her paw” (
patteis feminine singular) - ses pattes: “his/her paws” (
pattesis plural) - notre prochain tour: “our next trick” (
touris masculine singular)
