My name is LĂ©o. I live in a small apartment. I am a student. Today, it’s Sunday. Sunday is laundry day.)
(LĂ©o: Normally, I don’t like to do laundry. It’s a bit boring. But today, I have an idea. I’m going to do a… fun laundry!)
(Léo: In my room, I have a lot of dirty clothes. A big pile of clothes! There is a red t-shirt, blue pants, and white socks. I have to carry everything to the washing machine.)
(LĂ©o: I take all the clothes in my arms. It’s heavy! I have a funny idea. I put the big pile of clothes on my head. There! I am a king with a very colorful crown. I walk slowly in the hallway. Careful LĂ©o… one step… two steps… I am the king of the apartment!)
(LĂ©o: I arrive in the laundry room. I put all the clothes in the machine. The red with the white… it doesn’t matter! It’s faster. Now, the soap. The soap box says: “one scoop”. Only one scoop? My clothes are very dirty. I think one scoop is not enough.)
(LĂ©o: So, I am generous. I put in one scoop… two scoops… and… three scoops of soap! There. With three scoops, my clothes are going to be super clean! I am smart.)
(LĂ©o: I close the machine door and I press the “START” button. The machine starts to turn. I sit down and I watch a video on my phone. It’s calm.)
(LĂ©o: After five minutes, I see something strange. Foam. A lot of foam! The foam is coming out of the washing machine! Oh my! There is foam everywhere on the floor. It’s like a big, white, soft monster. I laugh. It’s the laundry monster! This is not boring at all!)
LĂ©o: Finalement, la machine s’arrĂȘte. La mousse disparaĂźt un peu. J’ouvre la porte doucement. Je regarde mes vĂȘtements. Mon pantalon est trĂšs bleu. Parfait. Mais… attends. Je regarde mes chaussettes. Elles sont… roses ! Mes chaussettes blanches sont maintenant roses ! C’est Ă©trange. Ah !
(LĂ©o: Finally, the machine stops. The foam disappears a little. I open the door slowly. I look at my clothes. My pants are very blue. Perfect. But… wait. I look at my socks. They are… pink! My white socks are now pink! That’s strange. Ah! I understand. It’s my red t-shirt. The red color from the t-shirt is on my socks.)
(LĂ©o: Now, I have unique socks. They are “LĂ©o special edition” socks. That’s very original, right?)
(LĂ©o: My laundry is finished. My clothes are clean. I have new pink socks and a funny story. Sunday is not so bad after all. Next time, maybe I will try four scoops of soap? No… I’m kidding. Maybe just two.)

đ Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two key grammar points that appear frequently in LĂ©o’s story.
1. Telling Stories with the Present Tense (Le Présent)
In French, especially in informal storytelling, the present tense (le présent) is often used to make a story feel more immediate and engaging. Léo uses it throughout his narrative to describe his actions and feelings as they happen.
Notice how he describes his entire laundry process using present tense verbs:
- Je m’appelle LĂ©o. (I am called LĂ©o.)
- Je prends tous les vĂȘtements… (I take all the clothes…)
(I put the big pile of clothes on my head.)
- La machine commence Ă tourner. (The machine starts to turn.)
- Je vois quelque chose de bizarre. (I see something strange.)
This is a common and effective way to narrate simple events in French, making it a great tense to master for beginners.
2. Simple Negation with ne... pas
To make a sentence negative in French, you typically wrap the verb with the two-part structure ne... pas. LĂ©o uses this structure to express what he doesn’t like or what isn’t true.
The structure is: Subject + ne + verb + pas + rest of sentence.
Look at these examples from the text:
- Je **n’**aime pas faire la lessive. (I do not like to do laundry.)
- Ce **n’**est pas grave ! (It’s not a big deal! / It doesn’t matter!)
(I think one scoop is not enough.)
Note: ne becomes n' before a verb that starts with a vowel, as in n'aime and n'est.
