Narrator: Bonjour. Je m’appelle Chloé. Je suis l’amie de Léo. Aujourd’hui, je vais chez Léo. J’arrive à son appartement et je frappe à la porte. Toc, toc, toc.
(Narrator: Hello. My name is Chloé. I am Léo’s friend. Today, I’m going to Léo’s place. I arrive at his apartment and I knock on the door. Knock, knock, knock.)

Narrator: Léo ouvre la porte. Il sourit.
(Narrator: Léo opens the door. He smiles.)

Léo: Salut Chloé ! Entre !
(Léo: Hi Chloé! Come in!)

Chloé: Salut Léo ! Ça va ? Tu as l’air content.
(Chloé: Hi Léo! How are you? You look happy.)

Léo: Oui, ça va très bien. J’ai une histoire amusante pour toi.
(Léo: Yes, I’m doing very well. I have a funny story for you.)

Narrator: Nous allons dans le salon. Léo me raconte son histoire.
(Narrator: We go into the living room. Léo tells me his story.)

Léo: Hier, Chloé, j’ai fait la lessive. J’ai mis tous mes vêtements dans la machine à laver.
(Léo: Yesterday, Chloé, I did the laundry. I put all my clothes in the washing machine.)

Narrator: Je l’écoute. Je sais que Léo n’aime pas beaucoup faire la lessive.
(Narrator: I listen to him. I know that Léo doesn’t much like doing the laundry.)

Chloé: Et alors ?
(Chloé: And so?)

Léo: Alors, après le lavage, je sors les vêtements. Je regarde et… une chaussette rouge a disparu ! Ma chaussette préférée !
(Léo: So, after the wash, I take out the clothes. I look and… a red sock has disappeared! My favorite sock!)

Narrator: Léo a l’air très sérieux quand il dit ça. C’est drôle.
(Narrator: Léo looks very serious when he says that. It’s funny.)

Chloé: Oh non ! La chaussette mystérieuse !
(Chloé: Oh no! The mysterious sock!)

Léo: Oui ! J’ai cherché partout. Dans la machine, par terre… rien. J’étais un peu triste.
(Léo: Yes! I looked everywhere. In the machine, on the floor… nothing. I was a little sad.)

Narrator: Il fait une petite pause.
(Narrator: He takes a short pause.)

Chloé: Et après ? Tu as trouvé la chaussette ?
(Chloé: And after? Did you find the sock?)

Léo: Oui ! La chaussette n’était pas perdue. Elle était cachée ! Elle était dans la manche de mon t-shirt blanc !
(Léo: Yes! The sock wasn’t lost. It was hidden! It was in the sleeve of my white t-shirt!)

Narrator: Nous rions ensemble.
(Narrator: We laugh together.)

Chloé: Ah Léo ! C’est une aventure ! Mais tu sais, c’est normal. Ça arrive souvent. Les petites chaussettes aiment jouer à cache-cache avec les grands vêtements.
(Chloé: Oh Léo! What an adventure! But you know, it’s normal. It happens often. Little socks like to play hide-and-seek with big clothes.)

Léo: Ah oui ?
(Léo: Oh, really?)

Chloé: Oui. Mais je suis ton amie pratique et j’ai une solution. Une astuce !
(Chloé: Yes. But I’m your practical friend and I have a solution. A tip!)

Narrator: Je prends mon sac et je sors un petit sac en filet.
(Narrator: I take my bag and I pull out a small mesh bag.)

Chloé: Regarde. C’est un sac de lavage. C’est très simple. Avant de faire la machine, tu mets tes deux chaussettes dans ce petit sac. Tu fermes le sac. Et tu mets le sac dans la machine avec les autres vêtements.
(Chloé: Look. This is a laundry bag. It’s very simple. Before starting the machine, you put your two socks in this little bag. You close the bag. And you put the bag in the machine with the other clothes.)

Narrator: Je lui donne le sac.
(Narrator: I give him the bag.)

Chloé: Comme ça, tes chaussettes restent ensemble. Elles ne peuvent pas se cacher.
(Chloé: That way, your socks stay together. They can’t hide.)

Narrator: Léo regarde le petit sac. Il a l’air très impressionné.
(Narrator: Léo looks at the little bag. He looks very impressed.)

Léo: Chloé, c’est génial ! C’est une idée super intelligente. Pourquoi je ne connais pas ça ? Merci beaucoup !
(Léo: Chloé, that’s brilliant! It’s a super smart idea. Why don’t I know about this? Thank you very much!)

Chloé: De rien, Léo ! C’est ça, les amis !
(Chloé: You’re welcome, Léo! That’s what friends are for!)

Narrator: Il est très content avec sa solution. Le mystère des chaussettes est résolu.
(Narrator: He is very happy with his solution. The mystery of the socks is solved.)

Léo: Maintenant, plus de problème de chaussettes. On boit un café ?
(Léo: Now, no more sock problems. Shall we have a coffee?)

Chloé: Oui, avec plaisir !
(Chloé: Yes, with pleasure!)

🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two key grammar points from Léo and Chloé’s conversation.

1. Talking About the Past: The Passé Composé

When Léo tells his story, he uses the passé composé to describe completed actions in the past. This is one of the most common past tenses in French. For most verbs, it’s formed with the auxiliary verb avoir (to have) in the present tense, followed by the past participle of the main verb.

Notice the pattern in Léo’s sentences:

  • J'**ai fait** la lessive. (I did the laundry.)
  • J'**ai mis** tous mes vêtements... (I put all my clothes…)
  • Une chaussette rouge **a disparu** ! (A red sock disappeared!)
  • Tu **as trouvé** la chaussette ? (You found the sock?)

2. Adjective Agreement

In French, adjectives must agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the noun they describe. Most adjectives also come after the noun.

Look at these examples from the story:

  • une chaussette (a sock) is feminine and singular.

    • une chaussette **rouge** (a red sock)
    • ma chaussette **préférée** (my favorite sock)
    • The sock wasn’t lost: Elle n'était pas perd**ue**. It was hidden: Elle était cach**ée**. Notice the extra -e because elle (she/it) refers to the feminine noun chaussette.
  • un t-shirt (a t-shirt) is masculine and singular.

    • mon t-shirt **blanc** (my white t-shirt) - blanc is the masculine form.
  • une histoire (a story) is feminine and singular.

    • une histoire **amusante** (a funny story)

🌍 Cultural Tip

In many French apartments, washing machines are smaller than those in North America, and clothes dryers (sèche-linge) are less common. French people often air-dry their laundry on a rack called an étendoir or tancarville, either inside or on a balcony. This is both energy-efficient and gentler on clothes.
