🔍 Grammar Focus
Let’s look at two simple but very useful patterns from the dialogue.
1. Making Suggestions with 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng)
怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) is a fantastic way to make a suggestion or ask for an opinion. You can state an idea and then add 怎么样? to the end, which is like saying “How about it?” or “What do you think?”.
In the script, Wang Wei uses this twice:
- 我们去书店,怎么样? (Wǒmen qù shūdiàn, zěnmeyàng?) - How about we go to the bookstore?
- 上午去,怎么样? (Shàngwǔ qù, zěnmeyàng?) - How about going in the morning?
This is a polite and common way to propose a plan to someone.
2. Asking “Why?” with 为什么 (wèishénme)
When you want to know the reason for something, 为什么 (wèishénme) is the word you need. It’s the direct equivalent of “why” in English.
When Li Na says she doesn’t want to go to the bookstore, Wang Wei asks for her reason:
- 为什么?你不喜欢书店吗? (Wèishénme? Nǐ bù xǐhuān shūdiàn ma?) - Why? Don’t you like bookstores?
You can place 为什么 at the beginning of a question to ask for the cause or reason behind an action or situation.

💡 Key Takeaways
Here are the three most important points to remember from this lesson:
- To make a suggestion, state the activity and add 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng)? at the end. For example, “我们去公园,怎么样?” (Let’s go to the park, how about it?).
- You can agree to a plan enthusiastically with 好啊 (hǎo a)! or confirm it simply with 好,没问题 (hǎo, méi wèntí).
- To express a reason for not wanting to do something, you can use the pattern: [Place] 人很多 (rén hěn duō), which means “[Place] has a lot of people.” This is a common and practical reason for avoiding places on weekends!
- Chinese time expressions generally go from bigger units to smaller ones: 星期六上午十点 (Xīngqīliù shàngwǔ shí diǎn) - Saturday (big) -> morning (medium) -> 10 o’clock (small).
