🔍 Grammar Focus

1. Describing Things with Adjectives and 很 (hěn)

In English, we use “is” or “are” to connect a noun with a descriptive word (adjective), like “The painting is big.” In Mandarin Chinese, you often use the adverb 很 (hěn) in this role. While can mean “very,” in simple descriptive sentences, it often just serves to link the noun and adjective smoothly. Without it, the sentence can sound incomplete or like a comparison.

Notice how Wang Wei and Li Na use it throughout their conversation:

  • 这个画很。 (Zhège huà hěn .) - This painting is big.
  • 那个画很。 (Nàge huà hěn xiǎo.) - That painting is small.
  • 猫很小,很可爱。 (Māo hěn xiǎo, hěn kě’ài.) - The cats are small and cute.
  • 这个画很好看。 (Zhège huà hěn hǎokàn.) - This painting is very beautiful.

2. Using Nouns and Colors

When you want to describe the color of an object in Chinese, you use the structure: Color + 的 (de) + Noun. The particle 的 (de) is a possessive particle that links the description (the color) to the noun.

Let’s look at examples from the script:

  • 一个红房子 (yī ge hóng de fángzi) - a red house
  • 绿树 (lǜ de shù) - green trees
  • 一个白猫 (yī ge bái de māo) - a white cat
  • 这个女人的衣服是蓝。(Zhège nǚrén de yīfu shì lán de.) - This woman’s clothes are blue. (Here, adding at the end is common to complete the descriptive phrase).

🌍 Cultural Tip

When Li Na and Wang Wei visit the 美术馆 (měishùguǎn), they are participating in a rapidly growing modern Chinese pastime. While China is famous for its ancient ink wash paintings, contemporary art has exploded in recent decades. Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai are now global art hubs. Beijing’s famous 798 Art District, for instance, is a sprawling complex of former military factories that were transformed into galleries, studios, and cafes. This blend of industrial history and cutting-edge art reflects a modern China that embraces both its rich heritage and its dynamic future.
