🔍 Grammar Focus

Let’s look at two simple but important grammar points from the dialogue.

1. Using the Measure Word: 个 (gè)

In Chinese, when you count a noun, you often need a “measure word” between the number and the noun. The most common and general-purpose measure word is 个 (gè). It’s like saying “a piece of” or “an item of” but is used much more frequently. In the dialogue, you see it used for general objects.

  • 我有一个东西。 (Wǒ yǒu yī dōngxi.) - I have one thing.
  • 这是一个蛋糕。 (Zhè shì yī dàngāo.) - This is one cake.
  • 我还有一个东西。 (Wǒ hái yǒu yī dōngxi.) - I also have one thing.
  • 这是一个礼物。 (Zhè shì yī lǐwù.) - This is one gift.

Notice that for a book, a different measure word, 本 (běn), is used: 一新的中文书 (yī běn xīn de Zhōngwén shū). While 个 (gè) is very versatile, many nouns have their own specific measure words you’ll learn over time!

2. Expressing “Also” or “Too” with 也 (yě)

To add the idea of “also” or “too,” you can use the adverb 也 (yě). It is always placed before the verb or adjective it modifies.

See how Wang Lei and Wang Wei use it in the conversation:

  • 这个蛋糕很大。 (Zhèige dàngāo hěn dà.) - This cake is also very big.
  • 很喜欢这本书。 (Wǒ hěn xǐhuān zhè běn shū.) - I also really like this book.
  • 你高兴,我高兴。 (Nǐ gāoxìng, wǒ gāoxìng.) - You’re happy, I’m also happy.

🌍 Cultural Tip

In China, while Western-style cakes are popular for birthdays, especially among younger generations, a traditional food to eat is ’longevity noodles’ (长寿面, chángshòu miàn). These long noodles symbolize a long and healthy life. For children and elders, receiving a red envelope (红包, hóngbāo) with money is also a common and auspicious birthday gift.
